NCR Release
National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) has named the Division I and Small College All Tournament teams following the Women’s All Star 7s National Cup.
The tournament was held on January 22-23 at the Houston Sabercats’ facility. Over 200 players, representing over 65 schools across the country, were selected based on tryouts and coach nominations.
The All Tournament teams recognize the standout players from both the Division I and Small College tournaments. The teams include 15 student athletes from 13 schools. Each Division also recognized a tournament MVP.
In a close Division I championship match, the Texas Armadillos edged the Midwest Big Green 17-10. Tournament MVP, Abigail Kinnard from Texas State, led the Armadillos with her outstanding defense and consistent leadership.
The Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union All Stars won the Small College Championship, beating Great Waters 22-7. Morgan Mattia, representing East Stroudsburg University, won the MVP honors through her explosive play under critical circumstances.
Angela Smarto, NCR Women’s Director, stated “This weekend was a fantastic display of the talent within our competition. Quality athletes and coaches need opportunities to test themselves, and they all rose to the occasion this weekend. I’m extremely proud of every player, coach, and referee who left the weekend better than they came.”
The All Stars tournament is used as a platform for selection to the NCR Women’s Select 7s Program which most recently competed in the 2021 Falcon 7s Tournament hosted by the American Rugby Pro Training Center.
