The Houston SaberCats re-signed South African Wynand Grassman for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old lock/back-row (28 in January) is 6’4″ and 245 lbs.
Wynand played 625 minutes in 10 matches, starting 9, for the SaberCats in 2022.
Wynand was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and attended Despatch High school. He threw the javelin and played rugby in high school.
He then went to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University from 2014-2018, playing in the Varsity Cup for the Madidaz. He also played age-grade rugby for Eastern Province, playing for the U19s and U21s.
Between 2015-2018 he played for Eastern Province senior sides in the Provincial Cup, Currie Cup 1st Division, and the SuperSport Rugby Challenge. In 2018-2019, he played with SWD Eagles in the Currie Cup 1st Division and SuperSport Rugby Challenge. In 2021-2022 he played with Slava Moscow Russia.
