Rugby New York signed Nicolas Mayhew for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The 33-year-old loosehead/tighthead prop is 5’11” and 255 lbs.
Nic is from Auckland, New Zealand, and comes from a rugby family. His father, John, a doctor, worked with NRL New Zealand Warriors, while bothers Mike and Richard both played in the English Premiership. Nick and his brothers were qualified to play for England, as his father was born there, New Zealand, or Australia, through Bill Rinkin, a grandfather.
Nic began playing rugby with Northcote, a local North Harbour Rugby Union club. He attended Massey University, earning a Bachelor of Business, Property Degree.
Nic has had extensive rugby experience, playing with North Harbour in 2010 and making three appearances in 2011 in the ITM Cup (later Mitre 10 Cup, and currently Bunnings NPC). he moved to England to play with the Harlequins, 2011-2014, and made his debut in the LV Cup against the Sale Sharks. He was dual registered with the RFU Championship and also played with Esher in 2011-12. He did the same with the London Scottish in 2013-14.
Nic left the Harlequins after making 20 appearances and returned to New Zealand and played with North Harbour in the ITM Cup, as he would do so through 2021, the latter in the Bunnings NPR. He signed with the Super Rugby blues for 2015-2016 and played 11 matches, and shifted to the Brumbies for 2017-18, playing 20 times.
After Mitre 10 Cup play with North Harbour in 2018, he signed a two-year contract with Yorkshire Carnegie in England, however financial issues had the club go into Company Voluntary Arrangement, and after 6 months he was back with North Harbour where he played in 2019.
In 2020 he played Super Rugby with the Sunwolves before returning again to North Harbour where he played in the Bunnings National Provincial Championship in 2021.
