The Houston SaberCats signed South African Marcell Muller for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The 20-year-old wing (21 in May) is 6’2″ and 225 lbs.
Marcel is from Bloemfontein, South Africa, and attended Grey College. He played for the Free State Cheetahs U13s in Craven Week, as well as rugby at Grey College, provincial hockey, and had national recognition in both the 200 and 400 meters in track.
Marcel continued to develop in rugby playing for the Free State Cheetahs in the 2016-2017 season for the U16s at Grant Khomo Week. The following year he moved up to the U18s Sevens team for the Free State Cheetahs, as well as playing for Grey College’s 2nd XV. By 2018-2019 he played for Grey College’s 1st XV, and his physicality and linebreaks gained him a professional contract with Mont[ellier Héault for the 2019-2020 season. Unfortunately, the pandemic affected his progress and he returned to South Africa and signed a contract with the Toyota Cheetahs, making his professional debut in 2021. he also played with the Free State Cheetahs in the South Africa kickoff pools.
