San Diego Legion signed Hencus Van Wyk for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The 29-year-old tighthead prop (30 in March) is 6’0″ and 260 lbs.

Hencus was slated to join San Diego Legion in 2020, however, he signed with NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes of the Top League in Japan. See legion comments below!

Hencus is from Nylstoom, South Africa, and attended Nylstoom High School where he played rugby. He played for the Limpopo Blue Blues from 2006-2010 for the U16s in Grant Khomo Week and the U18s in Craven Week. He played for the Blue Bulls in the 2011 U19 and 2012 U21 Provincial Championships. Hencus attended the University of Pretoria and played with the UP Tuks in 2013.

He made his senior rugby debut with the Blue Bulls in the 2011 Vodacom Cup against the Border Bulldogs and played in the 2013 Vodacom Cup, making three appearances. Between 2011-2016 he made 21 appearances for the Blue Bulls.

In 2013 he made his Super Rugby debut with the Bulls against the Waratahs and returned for another appearance in 2016. In 2016 he also played for the Blue Bulls XV, as well as for the Golden Lions. In 2017 he made three appearances for the Lions.

From 2015-2020 he played for the Munakata Sanix Blues, making 30 appearances in the Japanese Top League. He also played with the Sunwolves between 2018-2020 before signing a short-term contract with the Toyota Cheetahs in October 2020. In 2020 he also joined the NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes of the Top League in Japan. In 2021 he played in the Currie Cup with the Free State Cheetahs and now joins San Diego Legion for 2022.

San Diego Legion Comments

Hencus is a disciplined and experienced prop with Super Rugby experience. He’s spent over 10 years playing at the top of the game in South Africa and Japan. Originally scheduled to join SD Legion in 2020, the disruption of the past two seasons meant Hencus’ arrival was delayed until now. He is known as a skillful, robust, and powerful scrummager, while his silky handling and explosive pace are perfectly suited for the modern game. We are excited to see Hencus take the pitch in San Diego this season.
