The Houston SaberCats signed Danny Barrett for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The 31-year-old flanker (32 in March) is 6’3″ and 225 lbs.
Danny is from Pacifica, California, and attended Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory from 2004-2008 and played high school football, as well as rugby. He also played rugby with his brothers for San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club.
Danny attended the University of California, Berkeley from 2008-2013 before graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in American Studies. He played rugby for the Cal Varsity Rugby Team and was a Collegiate All-American in XVs from 2010-2013, as well as a Collegiate All-American in Sevens in 2013.
In 2013 he played on the Collegiate All-American tour of New Zealand, for San Francisco Golden Gate in the inaugural World Club Sevens in London, and for the USA Selects in the IRB Americas Rugby Championship.
His performance in 2013 gained him a month’s trial in 2014 with Gloucester in the English Premiership. He played in the 2014 Pacific Nations Cup and he made his debut for the Eagles Sevens Team at Las Vegas that year.
Danny played in 54 HSBC World Series Sevens Tournaments, was an Olympian in 2016 at Rio, and in 2020 in Toyko. In 2016-17, he was named to the HSBC World Sevens Series Dream Team. He also played at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco 2018. On October 9, 2021, he played in the first professional rugby sevens league in the United States, the Premier Rugby Sevens, where he was the captain of Team 7s.
Danny has also appeared in 13 international tests with the USA Men’s National Team. he made his debut against Scotland on June 7, 2014, and the last of his tests was at the 2015 Rugby World Cup against Japan in Gloucester.
Is there a coaching future for him? He was the head coach at Francis Parker School between 2019-2021.
