Rugby New York Apenisa Cakaubalavu Returns for 2022

Rugby New York has Apenisa Golea Cakaubalavu returning for the second year of his contract for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The 28-year-old wing (29 in February) is 6’3″ (193cm) and 212lbs (93kg).

Api played 791 minutes in 13 matches as a starter and scored 6 tries in 2021. He is a scoring threat with the ball in hand and among the fiercest tacklers in the league.

Api has kept active with rugby sevens and is finishing 2021 playing in the Dubai Invitational Sevens with the L.A.R. Barbarians.

Apensia is from Naroi, Moala on the island of Lau, Fiji. He was born in Suva and raised at Waiqanake Village. He attended primary school at Waiqanake District School and Secondary Education at Lami High School.

He began playing rugby at age 19, playing for Red Rock Rugby Club during the 2013-2014 season. He then played for Tabadamu Rugby Club from 2015-2017, and in 2017 was selected to play for the Fiji Sevens team. He made his debut for Fiji Sevens at the Oktoberfest Sevens in Germany in 2017 and in the 2017-2018 HSBC World Sevens Series played in the Dubai Sevens and Capetown Sevens and was the 13th man for others. In the 2019-2020 Series, the team finished in first place with the USA in second. He was a regular in the tournaments, but was the 13th man at the LA Sevens and completed the shortened 2020 season at the Vancouver Sevens, losing to New Zealand in the Quarterfinals. He has 23 caps for the Fiji Sevens.
