San Diego Legion signed Derrick Broussard for the remainder of the 2021 Major League Rugby season, his fourth with the team. The 31 year-old flanker is 6’1″, and 220 lbs.
Derrick played 260 minutes in 6 matches, starting twice, with the Legion in 2018 and signed in 2019 and 2020, but did not play. He is a longtime member of OMBAC. He also played in 2020 preseason matches.
Derrick is from Garden Grove, California and lives in San Diego. He attended Kingwood High School and went to San Diego State University from 2008-2013, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.
Derrick played rugby with the Aztecs in College and then joined OMBAC, where he has played since then.
Derrick played for the Philippines National 15s and 7s team beginning in 2016 and has earned five 15s caps for the Volcanoes and two caps for the sevens team. He helped the team gain third place in the 2016 Asia Rugby Championships, gaining the team a promotion to Division 1 in 2017. He also played in the 2017 Asia Sevens.
Derrick continued his education at Palomar College from 2016-2018, earning an Associate Degree in Nursing and is a Registered Nurse. He then completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Point Loma Nazarene University.
He has been an Assistant Football Coach Intern at Hoover High School in 2012 and was a Strength and Conditioning Intern while at San Diego State University.
In addition to being a registered nurse, Derrick has also been a performance coach.
Derrick has played in the Pacific Rugby Premiership and in the California Cup with OMBAC. He has played internationally for the Philippines and played professionally for the Legion in 2018.
