Austin Gilgronis Phil Hanson 2021 Profile

Austin Gilgronis re-signed Philip Hanson for the remainder of the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 28-year-old loosehead prop is 6’3″ and 250 lbs.

Phil re-signed with the team for 2020 but did not play during the truncated season. He played for the Austin Huns prior to joining the team again in 2021.

During the 2019 MLR season, Philip played in one match for 8 minutes off the bench against the Toronto Arrows on April 14.

Philip is from Dallas, Texas, and lives in Coppell. He attended Coppell High School and helped to begin the rugby team, but his participation in football limited his availability. He then attended Texas A&M University from 2011-2016 where he played rugby for the Aggies at several positions and earning Red River All-Conference honors at No. 8. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Graphic Design. He currently utilizes those skills as a digital marketing specialist.

Philip has played rugby for the Austin Huns in both 15s and 7s since 2016 and last season earned the Most Valuable Forward award with the Austin Huns.

Austin Gilgronis Comments

AG Rugby is thrilled to re-sign Austin Huns prop Phil Hanson. Hanson was a part of the AG squad in 2019 before COVID canceled the season. This spring, Hanson helped the Austin Huns to win the Division 1 Texas championship and looks to add key depth to the AG front row.

“We’ve called up Phil Hanson as injury-cover in our prop unit and we think he can step in and compete right away,” says Harris. “Phil was the first player I called and he was ready to go, and he came highly recommended from his coach, Adam Scheidler, and his Huns – now AG teammate, Patrick Coleman.”

Hanson will be in the team that travels to Seattle this Sunday to take on the Seawolves. Phil Hanson says, “I’m ready to go and I’m just so excited to get another opportunity at this level and represent the Huns, Austin, and Texas.”

Hanson is now the third local club player to sign with the AGs in the last two weeks, joining Austin Blacks hooker Brendan Rams and Huns teammate Patrick Coleman.

“It was a baptism by fire for him in training today and no doubt he will be sore tomorrow but the boys have been pretty impressed,” says Coach Harris.

Welcome back to the AGs, Phil Hanson!
