Austin Gilgronis re-signed Brendan Rams for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 32-year-old prop/hooker is 6’0″ and 265 lbs.
Brendan re-signed with the team during the offseason, but conflicts delayed his return to the team until now.
Brendan played 84 minutes in four matches as a reserve during the 2020 MLR season. Three of them he was a reserve at hooker and another at loosehead prop. He also carried the ball 13 times for 58 meters and made 12 tackles (92% tackle percentage). When he wasn’t playing for the Gilgronis, he continued to play with the Austin Blacks.
He played 230 minutes in 11 matches for the MLR side in 2019, carrying 30 times for 133 meters, and made 22 tackles. He also helped the Austin Blacks to the 2019 Men’s Club National Championship.
Brendan is from South Africa and attended St. Albans School and St. Albans College in Pretoria. He played age-grade rugby with the Blue Bulls Rugby Union from the Under-16s through the Senior level. He also played with the University of Pretoria (Tuks), Pumas Under-21s senior level, and Valke senior level.
In 2014 he moved to Austin, Texas, and played for the Austin Blacks and Austin Huns. He also was signed to the Denver Stampede in 2016, but a preseason knee injury caused him to miss the season. Following the 2017 year with the Huns, he returned to South Africa.
Austin Gilgronis Comments
Rams was re-signed this offseason and bolsters the front row for the playoff push. Rams will be in the team that travels to Seattle this weekend.
“Rams and I have been close since I took this job when I touched down in Austin and he was a part of this team’s plan this pre-season,” says Harris. “He’s injected energy into our team already and we’re excited to see him contribute.”
In January, Rams’ professional career outside of rugby as a personal trainer conflicted with the team’s planned COVID bubble. Rams and AG Head Coach Sam Harris mutually agreed to put his signing on hold until the time was right for Rams to reintegrate into the team. That time is now.
“This January, I told Rams to be ready for the SOS call and this weekend I sent a three-letter text… SOS and he said back ‘Let’s go,’” says Coach Harris. “He’s pretty excited and the group is excited to have him here, if he gets game time he’ll wear the jersey with pride.”
Welcome back to the AGs, Brendan Rams!
