Rugby United New York added Sondai ‘Sonny’ Adjei for the remainder of the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 25-year-old wing (26 in June) is 5’9″ and 185 lbs.
Sonny was born in Kumasi, Ghana, and moved to Chicago as a youth. He attended St Rita High School, graduating in 2013. He played football, ran track, and played rugby under high school coach Mike Fleming. He also was coached by David Fee of the Chicago Lions, where he played rugby during the Summer. He was a USA Rugby High School All-American at flyhalf, was invited to U20s camps, and in sevens was a hooker and scrumhalf. He played with the HSAA’s at the Rosslyn Park Sevens in London. He also played in the 2013 Rugbytown 7s with the USA Falcons 7s.
Sonny attended Davenport University from 2013-2015 and played D1A rugby his two years at the university. He then returned to play club rugby with the Chicago Lions, as well as for the sevens team at USA Rugby Club Sevens Nationals. He played with Chicago at the 2014 Elite City Sevens in Houston. In 2015 he played with the Stars XV against Life Men’s Rugby.
Sonny moved to New York during Summer 2019 and played with Old Blue in the American Rugby Premiership that Fall. He now joins Rugby United New York from Old Blue for the 2021 MLR season.
