The Houston SaberCats signed Lucas Albornoz for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 29-year-old lock/back-row (30 in April) is 6’4″ and 240 lbs.
Lucas was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada when his father Erick was playing with the Vancouver Trojans and his mother Gabriela Gonzalez, gave birth to him there. This gave him dual Canadian and Argentina citizenship.
Lucas attended the Escuela del CAE and then the University of Palermo where he majored in Marketing. He started playing rugby in Club Arletico Estudiantes de Parana and played age-grade rugby for Argentina for both the U18s and U19s. He spent a season in New Zealand prior to becoming 23 and then returned to Victoria to play for Canada.
In 2016, he played with Burnaby Lake in the British Columbia Premier League, as well as for the Prairie Wolfpack. He played for Canada A in the 2016 Americas Pacific Challenge and went on tour with Rugby Canada’s UK Tour to play Ulster and the Doncaster Knights. In 2017 he made his Canadian National Team debut against the United States at Vancouver on 18 February.
In 2018 he played twice with Northland in the Mitre 10 Cup competition and also played for Northland B. He also played rugby since 2018 for Waipu.
