Old Glory DC re-signed Josh Brown for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 33-year-old back row is 6’2″ and 245 lbs.
Josh played 40 minutes in 2 regular-season matches during the COVID-19 shortened 2020 MLR season. During the 2019 exhibition season, he was the team’s captain.
Josh is from Willingboro, New Jersey, and lives in Columbia, Maryland. He attended Long Reach High School in Maryland and played football. He then attended Salisbury State University and graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. He played rugby at the University for the Sharks and was the team captain for four years. He helped lead the team to three regional championships.
Josh played club rugby with Rocky Gorge and helped the team win USA Rugby Club National Division 2 Championships in 2012 and 2014. In the latter, he was named the Most Valuable Player. Josh has also represented the Capital Selects in 2016 against Stars Rugby XVs.
On December 1, 2018, Josh played professionally for the New England Free Jacks against Rugby United New York. His employment as a firefighter/paramedic in Anne Arundel County precluded his signing an extended contract with the team.
Signing with Old Glory DC allows Josh to be able to juggle his full-time job along with the demands of a professional rugby player.
Josh enjoys giving back to the community by promoting youth rugby. He has coached Howard County Hurricane-Express youth rugby for the last seven years, with the team winning the Maryland State Sevens Final in 2018. Many of his U19 players have gone on to play college rugby.
Old Glory DC 2020 Comments
Old Glory chairman Chris Dunlavey said in 2018 that “Josh Brown represents everything we hope to see from Old Glory players. Not only is he a home-grown talent who has achieved excellence on the pitch at every level, but he also demonstrates a set of personal values that reflect the very best of rugby. We could not be more proud to have signed him as our first player ever.”
Exhibition season coach Andrew Douglas remarked that “Josh had a great exhibition season for Old Glory and was certainly a crowd favorite. His big charging runs up-field certainly inspired his team and got the crowd excited. He was a strong captain during this time leading by example and being an exemplary leader on and off the field. It’s great to have Josh on board for the 2020 season and we are looking forward to seeing more of those inspirational carries in the MLR.”
