The Houston SaberCats signed Bronson Teles, who was the Dallas Jackals’ 21st pick in the Major League Rugby Collegiate Draft. The 22-year-old back-row (23 in March) is 6’3″ and 250 lbs.
Branson had the opportunity to sign with his hometown team, the SaberCats after the Dallas Jackals postponed their entry to the MLR until 2022. His signing was revealed in the MLR Kickoff Podcast in about the 20th minute by Houston SaberCats Head Coach Paul Healy.
Bronson was born in Esbjerg, Denmark, and grew up in Richmond, Texas, a suburb that is west of Houston. He was encouraged to play rugby by his father, who played in South Africa and began playing rugby at nine years old at Katy Barbarians Youth Rugby Club. He attended Foster High School where he played football while continuing to play rugby for the Katy Barbarians, earning All-State honors, became a High School All-American, as well as, a USA Under-20 selection. He also became an eagles Scout in 2009.
Bronson went to the University of Arizona between 2016-2020, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Industry. In 2017, as a freshman on the rugby team, he was selected as a Marke Loane Medal Recipient which allowed him to attend the UQ Rugby Academy at the University of Queensland Rugby Club in Australia.
He was the team captain for two years from 2018-2020, was selected PAC-12 Conference Co-Player of the Year, and was a nominee for the Rudy Scholz Award for national player of the year. Bronson also was selected to the USA U20 team three consecutive years from 2016-2018, the USA U18s three-times from 2014-2016, and was selected to the 2nd Team Collegiate All-American in 2019. He also is a three-time 1st Team All PAC-12 Conference from 2018-2020 and 2nd Team All PAC-12 Conference in 2017.
Bronson was one of the players that were featured by Major League Rugby ahead of the Collegiate Draft.
