The Houston SaberCats re-signed Zachary Short for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 24-year-old flyhalf/scrumhalf/wing (25 in May) is 6’1” and 195lbs.
Zach was a reserve for three matches during the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season. Of those matches, he played in one for three minutes. His experience in 2020, should result in increased playing time for 2021.
After the 2020 MLR season, he returned to New Zealand and played rugby XVs and 7s with Greeton Marist.
Zach is from Redding, California but moved with his family to Tauranga, New Zealand when he was nine months old.
Zach attended Tauranga Boys’ College in Tauranga, New Zealand, and played rugby while there. He then played with the Greerton Colts in 2015 and later Greerton Marist in the Bay of Plenty Premier Club Rugby competition. Zach also played representative rugby in the Ellis Shield U45kg competition.
In 2018 he was named Player of the Year for Greerton Marist and also played for the Waikato U85kg side. In 2019 he also played for Bay of Plenty Development. He mows joins the Houston SaberCats following the conclusion of the 2019 season.
Zach is an experienced halfback, wing, and kicker, who will provide the SaberCats with flexibility in the backs during the 2021 MLR season.
