Update: Hencus Van Wyk will not be joining San Diego Legion and instead has signed with NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes of the Top League in Japan.
San Diego Legion signed Hencus Van Wyk for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 28-year-old tighthead prop (29 in March) is 6’0″ and 262 lbs.
Hencus is from Nylstoom, South Africa, and attended Nylstoom High School where he played rugby. He played for the Limpopo Blue Blues from 2006-2010 for the U16s in Grant Khomo Week and the U18s in Craven Week. He played for the Blue Bulls in the 2011 U19 and 2012 U21 Provincial Championships. Hencus attended the University of Pretoria and played with the UP Tuks in 2013.
He made his senior rugby debut with the Blue Bulls in the 2011 Vodacom Cup against the Border Bulldogs and played in the 2013 Vodacom Cup, making three appearances. Between 2011-2016 he made 21 appearances for the Blue Bulls.
In 2013 he made his Super Rugby debut with the Bulls against the Waratahs and returned for another appearance in 2016. In 2016 he also played for the Blue Bulls XV, as well as for the Golden Lions. In 2017 he made three appearances for the Lions.
From 2015-2020 he played for the Munakata Sanix Blues, making 30 appearances in the Japanese Top League. He also played with the Sunwolves between 2018-2020 before signing a short-term contract with the Toyota Cheetahs in October 2020.
Hencus will now focus on a new challenge in playing with the San Diego Legion in 2021.
