San Diego Legion Names Ian Gibbons Director of Athletic Performance

San Diego Legion Release

San Diego, CA (Oct. 29, 2020) – San Diego Legion is pleased to welcome Ian Gibbons as the new Head of Athletic Performance. In collaboration with SD Legion co-head coaches Scott Murray and Zack Test, Ian will oversee physical preparation and player development for the Major League Rugby (MLR) team.

Comments from SD Legion Executive Chairman Darren Gardner on hiring Ian Gibbons as Head of Athletic Performance:
“We are building a world-class organization for our players and fans to be proud of. Player performance is a key part of this, as rugby is a very physical sport, and Ian will have an important role at both the MLR and academy levels. At the same time, we are putting the finishing touches on our SD Legion high-performance center in Carlsbad, CA, where Ian will be based. This will provide both a high-performance facility for our players, as well as an opportunity and environment for the rugby community in San Diego and across the U.S. to hone their skills, strength and conditioning and work towards peak athletic performance.”

Prior to joining the San Diego Legion, Ian spent the last two years in MLR, coaching the Colorado Raptors in 2020 and the 2019 MLR Championship-winning Seattle Seawolves. Ian brings more than 15 years of experience within elite rugby, including roles at USA Rugby as well as Saracens and the Scarlets in the UK.

“I have great respect and affinity for the San Diego Legion and I’m humbled to be joining a high-quality coaching staff and playing group,” said Gibbons. “Working alongside Zack Test and Scott Murray, we plan to build on the momentum created over the last few years and bring home a championship win for San Diego.”
