Dallas Harlequins Names Michael Engelbrecht Defense Coach

Dallas Harlequins Release

Dallas Harlequins RFC is excited to announce the appointment of TRU Hall of Famer and USA U20’s coach, Michael ‘Moley’ Engelbrecht, as Defense Coach for the upcoming season.

Engelbrecht, who first joined Harlequins as a player in 1987, before going on to lead the club in various capacities including as Head Coach & Director of Rugby continues an incredible legacy with the club-matched only by his humility.

“I’m really excited to be a part of this latest Quins journey that started with Elaine and now has Danny at the helm.  Great things have been happening with the Quins over the last few years under their leadership.  After talking with Danny and better understanding his vision, the culture he wants to develop, and his plans for the upcoming season I’m confident that prospects for the future of our club are bright.

It was therefore a no brainer when Danny approached me with the invitation to join the Quins coaching staff. Additionally, what really excites and energizes me is the players… having worked with the club a little over the past season I’ve seen first-hand the dedication and enthusiasm that this group has for the club but also that hunger for development as a player.  I’m eager to get stuck in and contribute as much as I can to their development and the success of our club.” – Michael Engelbrecht

A player-centered coach, with over 16 years’ experience in USA Rugby age-grade pathways, ‘Moley’ injects exceptional pedigree and synergy to the player-development & holistic approach of the Coaching Staff.

Notably through his coaching roles with National teams USA Men’s U20’s (2008-2009, 2013-Present Day), USA U19’s (2004-2007), USA High School All American (2010-2014) and more locally as Head Coach of University of North Texas (2013-Present Day) & Texas High School High Performance (2003-2006, 2013-Present Day), mark Engelbrecht as a truly influential figure in the sport and the lives of many young rugby athletes, many of whom do or have since donned the USA Eagles National Team uniform.

Transitioning players and staff into professional rugby in back-to-back seasons-followed up by the appointments of both Danny Carlton & Michael Engelbrecht, both National High-Performance Pathway Coaches-builds a great image and insight to the direction of the team.

Head Coach Danny Carlton commented; “‘Moley’ is firstly one of the most widely-respected rugby figures in the DFW area, he’s the first person I wanted to talk to about joining our Coaching Staff. His pedigree as a coach and energy, coupled with his 16 years in USA Rugby age-grade player development pathways, is very rare to find anywhere in the US and fits incredibly well with our direction-he’s a top-level coach but an even better person. I’m delighted to work with him and more so for our players-with the support this offers them to develop, attack their goals & generally have the best environment to enjoy their rugby in as possible.”
