Rugby United New York signed Samuela Tawake for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 23-year-old tighthead prop (24 in September) is 6’0″ (1m83) and 265 lbs (120 kg).
Samu is from Suva, Fiji. He attended Marist Brother High school in 2013 and was the rugby captain of the 1st XV. The following year he attended Christ’s College, Canterbury, New Zealand, and was also the 1st XV captain. In 2016 he attended Ara Institute of Canterbury.
Samu played rugby for the Fiji U20s during the 2013-2014 season and played in three matches at the IRB Junior World Championship. He was also the captain of the Fiji U18s that same year.
In 2018 he played one game for Canterbury in the National Provincial Championship and in ten matches in the 2019-2020 season for the Manawatu Turbos in the Mitre 10 Cup. In 2018 he played for the Fiji Warriors against Western Force and in 2019 was a starter for Fiji in the team’s 33-31 win over Barbarians on16 Nov 2019 at Twickenham. He gained his first cap for Fiji against Georgia at Murrayfield, Dec 5, 2020.
