Rugby United New York re-signed Troy Lockyear for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 23-year-old fullback/center (24 in October) is 6’2″ and 195 lbs. Troy, AKA “The Magician,” started two matches during the 2020 MLR season for RUNY.
Troy is from Heversham, England, and attended Eton College from 2010-2015. He was a multi-sport athlete who played rugby, soccer, cricket, and track and field. He excelled in rugby, earning the Vice-Captaincy of the Senior team at Eton College. He spent time with the Premiership’s Wasps’ Academy, where he started at fullback for the club. He also earned county representative honors from 2010- 2015. He also played with the U18s Southern Lambs in 2014.
Troy continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley from 2015-2019, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy. He played rugby with Cal’s Varsity Rugby Program, however, injuries during his first two seasons limited his playing time.
After impressing the Golden Bears’ coaching staff at Cal’s Varsity Rugby camp, Lockyear committed to the Berkeley based rugby powerhouse to continue his academic and athletic career. The rangy fullback arrived on campus in the fall of 2015 and was expected to make an immediate impact. However, untimely injuries throughout his first two seasons limited his playing time.
His final two years with the Golden Bears he started at fly-half and fullback. He achieved several honors while at Cal. He was a Collegiate All-American and First Team All PAC 12 selection in both rugby sevens and XVs. He was a 2018 Collegiate Rugby Sevens National Championship Dream Team selection for Rugby 7s Magazine in 2018. Cal won the 2016 and 2017 Varsity Cup National Championship and won two National 7s Championships.
Troy played for the Collegiate All-Americans 23-22 victory over Canadian University XVs in 2019 and for the Collegiate All-Americans at the Rugbytown 7s that year.
Since September, Troy has been employed Pembroke and Rye in London, England in Design Work Placement.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent Rugby United New York, the city, and its fans,” shared Lockyear. “RUNY has established itself as a frontrunner within Major League Rugby. I am extremely excited to become part of the team and help the organization progress.”
“I have watched Troy over the last number of seasons playing with Cal, mainly at 15, but he can play both 10 & 13 as well,” RUNY Head Coach Greg McWilliams told us. “It was great to spend time with him while the All Americans were in camp last June. I had the chance to watch him against the Eagles at training- he has a very solid skill set and is a smart player. We all look forward to working with Troy.
