Rugby United New York Signs Apenisa Cakaubalavu

Rugby United New York signed Apenisa Golea Cakaubalavu for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old wing (28 in February) is 6’3″ (193cm) and 212lbs (93kg).

Apensia is from Naroi, Moala on the island of Lau, Fiji. He was born in Suva and raised at Waiqanake Village. He attended primary school at Waiqanake District School and Secondary Education at Lami High School.

He began playing rugby at age 19, playing for Red Rock Rugby Club during the 2013-2014 season. He then played for Tabadamu Rugby Club from 2015-2017, and in 2017 was selected to play for the Fiji Sevens team. He made his debut for Fiji Sevens at the Oktoberfest Sevens in Germany in 2017 and in the 2017-2018 HSBC Wolrd Sevens Series played in the Dubai Sevens and Capetown Sevens and was the 13th man for others. In the 2019-2020 Series, the team finished in first place with the USA in second. He was a regular in the tournaments, but was the 13th man at the LA Sevens and completed the shortened 2020 season at the Vancouver Sevens, losing to New Zealand in the Quarterfinals. He has 23 caps for the Fiji Sevens.
