USA Exit Canada Sevens 6th After England Loss

2020 Canada Sevens 5th Place Final

The HSBC Canada Sevens was held on March 7-8, 2020 at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The USA opened pool play with a 19-5 win over Samoa, defeated Scotland 28-12, and concluded pool play losing 29-7 to Australia to finish second in Pool D. The USA met South Africa in the Cup Quarterfinals, losing 26-10 and the USA defeated Fiji  40-14 in the 5th place semifinal. The Eagles Sevens meet England in the 5th place fina, losing 26-24.

The USA vs England Recap

The USA Men’s Sevens comeback against England was not enough as they lost to England 26-24 at the HSBC Canada Sevens 5th Place Fina.

Following a break by Malon Al-Joboori and another by Maka Unufe, an offload by Unufe to Carlin Isles ended with a try to take a 5-0 lead.

England struck back with three tries by Tom Bowen, Phil Burgess and Ben Harris with Tom Mitchell adding two conversions to lead 19-5 at the break.

Perry Baker answered with a try to begin the half and England’s Tom Emery answered back with a try to push the lead to 26-10 after Mitchell’s conversion.

Baker added two more with Madison Hughes converting both for a final of 26-24.

The USA finished in 6th place in Vancouver and with the postponement of the Singapore and Hong Kong Sevens to October, the next stop of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series will take place in London, May 23-24. Paris will be the final stop before the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
