The match between Austin Gilgronis and the Utah Warriors ended in a 20-20 draw on February 22 at Bold Stadium at Circuit of the Americas.
Austin Gilgronis are looking for their first win after losses to the Toronto Arrows and to Rugby United New York. The Utah Warriors are 1-1 after a loss to Rugby ATL and a win against the New England Free Jacks.
Next Saturday the Austin Gilgronis will host Old Glory DC at Toyota Field in San Antonio and the Utah Warriors face the Colorado Raptors in Glendale, Colorado that same day.
Austin Gilgronis vs Utah Warriors Match Recap
Two minutes into the match the Gilgronis was penalized with the Utah Warriors bring out the tee. Hagen Schulte’s penalty goal attempt was wide.
A penalty at the breakdown led to the Gilgronis striking first with a Marcelo Torrealba penalty goal to lead 3-0. The Gilgronis then attacked within the Warriors 22-meters but needed to fall back as Rodrigo Silva was pressured. A turnover then thwarted a promising attack.
A Gilgronis penalty resulted in a lineout just outside the Austin 22-meters. A chip and a chase by Schulte resulted in a Gilgronis penalty and the Warriors had a lineout 5-meters out. Repeat infractions sent Jamie Mackintosh to the bin. Utah mauled and Mason Pedersen was penalized. This time the Warriors elected a scrum. This required Juan Echeverria to enter the match.
A couple of more scrums later, Utah Warriors Dwayne Polataivao went through the 9 channel for a try near the posts. Hagen Schulte added the extras for a 7-3 lead.
A penalty advantage in the 42nd minute for a high tackle led to a Schulte penalty goal to extend the lead to 10-3 at the break.
The Gilgronis began the second half on the attack with a Frank Halai break and a Corey Jones grubber that was grounded by the Warriors in-goal for a 22-meter drop.
Austin responded and advanced to within the Warriors 22-meters and following a quick tap from a penalty, Tiaan Strauss Erasmus scored a try. Torrealba’s conversion leveled the match at 10 all.
A Rodrigo Silva highball was taken by Utah and then the Warriors were penalized at the breakdown. Silva kicked to touch for a lineout. An Elan-Puttick pass to Lino Saunitoga was fed to Frank Halai for a try in his first match with the team. Torrealba added the extras to lead 17-10.
Utah sliced the lead to 17-13 after a turnover and a penalty goal. They then crossed in-goal with Michael Baska being held up. The Warriors crossed in-goal again and Jurie Van Vuuren was held up.
Austin Gilgronis defense held and following a Utah penalty added a penalty goal by Torrealba, 20-13.
The Warriors came back in the closing minutes with a try by Kalolo Tuiloma with Schulte converting for a 20 all draw.
