San Diego Legion vs New England Free Jacks Match Preview

INJURY UPDATE | Simon Courcoul will start at prop for Tolu Fahamokioa who will miss today’s match due to late injury unavailability. Kyle Ciquera will join the team as an impact reserve

San Diego Legion host the New England Free Jacks on Sunday, February 23 at Torero Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 pm ET. The match will be broadcast on FoxSports2 and on Cox. International viewers may watch on Major League Rugby Facebook Live.

The San Diego Legion top the Western Conference standings with a 2-0 record and have 10 points after bonus-point wins over the Seattle Seawolves and the Colorado Raptors. The New England Free Jacks played tow matches as part of MLR Vegas Weekend, beating Rugby United New York and losing to the Utah Warriors. They are in third place in the Eastern Conference.

San Diego Legion

Legion Head Coach Rob Hoadley has made one change in the starters with Nathan Sylvia getting his first start of the regular season. Reserve changes include Jamie Dever, Ryan Matyas, and Keni Nasqeqe at prop, center/wing, and back row, respectively.

The Legion has started the 2020 MLR season strong and has a 2-0 record and will look to get the ball into the hands of their backs to work their magic. The team is strong in set-pieces along with the Free Jacks, so minimizing penalties could be the major factor of the day.

If the game is close, the final twenty to thirty minutes could prove the difference when tactical substitutions are made.

New England Free Jacks

Free Jacks Head Coach Josh Smith has made three changes in the starters with Tulu Fahamokioa at loosehead prop, Conor Kindregan at blindside flanker and Danny Collins getting his first start at wing.

Reserves changes include Evan Geist, Oliver Engelhart, and Christian Adams.

The Free Jacks need to punish discipline errors early and try to get an early lead. John Poland needs an accurate day with his boot and the Free Jacks will need win turnovers in the breakdown.

Last week the Utah Warriors tried to exploit the wide channel and the team likely worked hard on its cover defense. Danny Collins was brought into a starting role on the wing as an adjustment.

The Free Jacks will not be taken lightly by the Legion, but both teams will try to stick to their game plan developed by two crafty coaches along with their staff.
