Houston SaberCats vs Old Glory DC Match Preview

A match replay will be on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 9 pm CT on AT&T SportsNet. International viewers may watch on the Major League Rugby Facebook live. The Houston SaberCats opened the season with a win over the Colorado Raptors and then lost to the Toronto Arrows when the ball was held up in-goal. After Old Glory DC opened with a loss against NOLA Gold, they bounced back and won their home opener against the Seattle Seawolves.

Houston SaberCats

Houston SaberCats Head Coach Paul Healy has made eight changes in the starters from last week’s match against the Toronto Arrows. Nicolas Solveyra, Diego Fortuny and Charlie Connolly at in the front row with Tim Cadwallader, Val Lee-Lo, and Boyd Wiggins moving to the reserves. Rob Meeson and Cecil Garber are at lock and openside flanker, respectively with Victor Comptat and Adriaan Booysen in the reserves.

Backs changes include Thomas Morani joining the team from Argentina at the inside center with Taylor Howden moving to the reserves, Kieran Farmer at wing and Osea Kolinisau at fullback, as both Zach Pangelinan and Matias Freyre are not on the matchday roster. Joining the reserves is Zach Short.

With a 16 match season, Paul Healy has elected to rotate the players to keep them fresh and to rely on his team’s entire roster.

The team’s winning streak ended last week when a player from the 14-man maul was held up in-goal against the Toronto Arrows. Old Glory was on the winning end of holding up the Seattle Seawolves last week. Both teams will look to use tactical kicking to get the ball into their opponent’s territory and punish the other team if they commit infractions while in their own half. Teams will also use lineouts as an attacking platform from close range.

Old Glory DC

Old Glory DC Head Coach Andrew Douglas has made three changes from the team’s home opener win against the Seattle Seawolves. Dylan Pieterse and Matt Houston gain their first start of the season at lock and flanker, respectively. Declan O’Donnell joins the matchday 23 for the first time at wing. Josh Brown also is on the regular-season roster for the first time as a reserve.

Old Glory DC thrilled their sell-out crowd during its home debut and will be looking to utilize tactical kicking and an expansive game to keep the momentum going. They face a Houston SaberCats team, who has continued to be a formidable team since the last month of the 2019 season.
