Rugby United New York Defeat Austin Gilgronis in Offensive Match

Rugby United New York defeated the Austin Gilgronis 49-31 on February 15 at Sam Boyd Stadium as part of MLR Vegas Weekend. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast for international viewers on Major League Rugby Facebook live.

Both teams lost in the opening week of the 2020 Major League Rugby season. RUNY lost to the New England Free Jacks to open the  MLR Vegas Weekend, while Austin Gilgronis lost their home opener to the Toronto Arrows.

RUNY will travel to face Rugby ATL next Sunday, while the Austin Gilgronis host the Utah Warriors the preceding night.

Rugby United New York vs Austin Gilgronis Match Recap

While Mason Petersen was putting a huge hit on Mathieu Bastareaud, the Gilgronis were offsides and RUNY kicked to touch. They mauled from a lineout and mauled again after a penalty advantage with Bastareaud scoring a try and Cathal Marsh slotting the conversion to lead 7-0.

A Roosters turnover had Ben Foden offloading to Chris Mattina, who lost the ball forward in contact resulting in a Gilgronis scrum about 12-meters out in defense.  A Torrealba box kick gave the team some breathing room.

RUNY went through multiple phases on a sustained attack with Cathal Marsh finding a seam for a try, which he then converted to lead 14-0.

Following a kick ahead by Dylan Fawsitt, Rodrigo Silva was isolated and was penalized for not releasing. Foden kicked to touch and then the Roosters mauled but was penalized as they were crossing in-goal. The Gilgronis cleared and counter-attacked again and a penalty by RUNY resulted in a lineout. A linebreak by Lino Saunitoga had him offloading to Dominic Akina for a try, with Marcelo Torrealba adding the extras to cut the lead to 14-7.

A chip ahead by Tagive was recovered by him and the Roosters were penalized with Torrealba slotting a penalty goal to cut the lead to 14-10.

RUNY answered back after a Gilgronis penalty for not rolling away electing a scrum 5-meters out instead of kicking for goal. Basta picked from No.8 and RUNY was held up in-goal. The Roosters attacked from a 5-meter scrum again and Sione Fangaiuiha was sent to the bin for a repeat infraction. Following another scrum, Troy Lockyear scored in the left corner with Marsh perfect on the night to lead 21-10.

RUNY kicked for territory after taking down a Roosters maul. The team mauled again from a lineout and Maikeli Naramaitonga was sent to the bin. Dylan Fawsitt then added a bonus point try as he mauled over the line. Marsh slotted again to lead 28-10 at the break.

Second Half

Dylan Fawsitt attacked from the opening restart of the second half and Mark O’Keeffe had another strong rum. The ball was held up in-goal and resulted in a 5-meter scrum. It took four defenders to bring Basta down and soon after the ball was lost forward turning the ball over to the Gilgronis. The Gilgronis took a free-kick after a RUNY scrum infraction and cleared.

The Rooster ran a fade that opened a gap for Troy Lockyer to shoot a gap for a try with marsh adding the extras to lead 35-10.

A Gilgronis attack through phases ended at the RUNY 22-meter line with a knock-on as they had numbers wide. RUNY emptied their bench fro the remaining 28 minutes in the match.

The Gilgronis answered with a run by Elan-Puttick and Mason Pedersen finished with a try with Torrealba slotting the kick to cut the lead to 35-17.

The Roosters added another try by Julio Cesar Giraldo after the Roosters lineout through was tapped back by the Gilgronis. Harry Bennett then slotted the conversion to lead 42-17.

Sione Fangaiuiha caught the ensuing restart and motored to within 10-meters of in-goal. Anthony Parry was sent to the bin with the Gilgronis taking a penalty tap within 5-meters of the line. Several phases later, Elan-Puttick added a try in the right corner with Torrealba slotting to cut the lead to 42-24.

The Gilgronis then added another after a Elan-Puttick offload to Torrealba to Gabe Farley inside for a bonus point try. Torrealba added the extras, 42-31.

The Austin Gilgronis played inspired rugby during the stretch with the Roosters reserves also stepping up the pace of the match.

Troy Lockyear intercepted a pass and motored within 5 meters from in-goal with Farley saving the try. A penalty advantage resulted in a lineout 5-meters out with the Roosters mauling with Fawsitt held up in-goal. Kyle Sumsion went blind from a scrum and added a try with his leg drive holding off four defenders. Harry Bennett added the kick for a 49-31 lead.

With the win, Rugby United New York improved its record to 1-1 with five points for their effort. The Austin Gilgronis record fell to 0-2, but they secured a bonus point for scoring four tries.

Man of the Match honors went to Troy Lockyear for his brace.
