The Austin Gilgronis will face the Austin Blacks in their final pre-season match ahead of next week’s start of the Major League Rugby regular season. The match will take place on Friday, January 31 at Bold Stadium at the Circuit of the Americas. Kickoff is at 7 pm CT and there is free admission to the match. There is not a stream of the match planned.
Loyals LLC announced the purchase of the Austin Herb earlier in the week and announced the change of the team name to the Austin Gilgronis. The name has caused a stir in the rugby community and has created a rise in social media traffic.
The Austin Gilgronis will open the regular season at home against the Toronto Arrows, a semifinalist in the 2019 MLR playoffs. Kickoff for the match is at 8 pm at Bold Stadium and tickets are available.
The Austin Blacks are a USA Club Rugby Division 1 club and are among the top clubs in the U.S. They field Division 1, 2 and 3 sides and the D3 team is the defending USA Club champion.
The Gilgronise has two new players making their preseason debut with the team. JP Novak is a flanker with the Austin Huns and Stewart Morris formerly played with Baylor University. Colby Stevens played for the team in the final match last season and plays for Life West.
The Gilgronis has Brazil and Uruguay National Team players in Wilton Rebolo and Juan Echeverria, respectively, in the front row. Mason Pedersen has played with the USA Selects. The team should also have some exciting news soon with the reported signing of Adam Ashley-Cooper in the rugby media, as well as another international addition. Ashley-Cooper has not been confirmed by the team at this time.
The Austin Blacks have Gilgronis players Tiaan Erasmus, Skyler Adams, and Reece Czarnecki on their roster for tonight’s match. Brendan Rams, Antonio Winn, and Knute O’Donnell have previously played with the MLR side in 2019 or 2018. Chris Baumann is a capped USA National Team player and one is a player to watch. Vince Jobo played with NOLA Gold in 2018 and in 2019.
