Austin Elite Rugby Returns to Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in 2020

On August 21, 2019, Dustin Zerrer, who maintains the Austin Elite Rugby Supporters Facebook page and who recently joined the team in the Commercial side, discussed a major team announcement with Paul A. Santinelli on the Austin Elite Supporters Podcast.

The team will be staying in the Austin area in 2020 and playing their matches at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex. One Non-MLR season match will be played at another location within the Austin catchment area.

There will be an emphasis on former collegiate players from Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas who had USA eligibility. Players will need to fit into the culture being developed, have the character and leadership skills the team desires and fit within the MLR salary cap.

The team has involved Paul Santinelli since April in working with Richard Osborn, Todd Clever, Andrew Suniula and others in developing the team’s purpose, which is to become the epicenter of rugby in Central Texas. This will promote professional standards and high-performance pathways for the National Team and the Olympics for both men and women, as well as encouraging grassroots youth rugby through the professional level.

The team will espouse a value system of respect for all that is involved in the sports, from the players, fans, and the community. Character, pride, enjoyment, and inclusivity are also key values.

In developing the team’s purpose, values, and mission, there was a renewed commitment to the community to integrate rugby in Central Texas and to create value for everyone. The area’s rugby teams, the Austin Huns, Austin Blacks, Austin Valkyries, San Antonio, and Rock Rugby (youth) and others were consulted in the process and will be part of the pathway.

There will be other team announcements in the coming days, such as player signings. On Monday, August 26, tickets will be available to purchase.
