Mexico Gains Narrow Win Over Capital Rugby Union Selects

The Capital Rugby Union Selects lost to the Mexico Men’s National Rugby Team 17-15 in Mexico City on July 27, 2019. The match served as a warmup for Mexico’s participation in the Americas Rugby Challenge.

Match Recap

The Capital Rugby Union Selects took an early 5-0 lead after a try by Will Miller. The team extended the lead to 8-0 after a penalty goal by flyhalf Pat Audino.

Mexico answered back with a try in the corner by Ricardo Ancira to cut the lead to 8-5 at the break.The Mexico wing lost consciousness on the play and resulted in a second half delay over an hour as the ambulance needed to return to La Salle Esmeralda, where the match was held.

Mexico scored two tries in the second half, the first by Alejandro Chavez, and the last one by Fharid Samano with Franco Guerrero converting for a 17-8 lead. The Selects answered back with a converted try and conversion by Pat Audino to cut the lead to 17-15.

The Selects thought they had scored another try, which would have led to victory, however the try was invalidated by the referee.

The Capital Rugby Union Selects continue to play a comprehensive representative rugby schedule. Playing Mexico’s National Team was a challenge away in the altitude, but the team represented themselves well, while providing Mexico with a competitive match that will prepare the team for the Americas Rugby Challenge.

Pat Audino was named Man of the Match for the Selects.
