2019 Lima Pan American Games: Rugby Sevens Day 1 Results

The Lima Pan-American Games Men’s and Women’s Rugby Sevens began July 26 with the first round of Pool play at the Villa Maria del Triunfo cluster in Lima, Peru. On day two there are two pool matches and on Day 3 on July 28th the knock out round is being held. The Pan American Games are being held from July 26 to August 11, 2019.

Eight Men’s and Women’s teams will compete in each tournament. With 12 athlete rosters, a total of 192 athletes are scheduled to compete.

Day One Women’s Pool Round One Matches

Pool A

Colombia vs Argentina

Colombia opened the 2019 Lima Pan American Rugby Sevens competition with a 24-14 win over Argentina. Laura Mejia scored two tries for Colombia with Maria Arzuaga and Isabel Romero adding others. maria Lopera added a conversion. Argentina’s Myriam Mattus and Valeria Monterio scored tries with Monterio also adding a conversion, while Maria Pedrozo also converted.

USA vs Trinidad & Tobago

The USA opened the 2019 Lima Pan American Games with a 55-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago. The USA scored 9 tries and added 5 conversions in the winning effort. Ariana Ramsey made her debut with three second-half tries. Kristi Kirshe had two tries, Cheta Emba had two tries and a conversion, Stephanie Rovetti 1 try, Kayla Canett 1 try and a conversion, and Alena Olsen 3 conversions.

Pool B

Brazil vs Peru

Peru opened the match with a try by Michelle Flores before Brazil scored 33 unanswered points. Brazil captain Raquel Kochhann scored a try and added 3 conversions, Isadora Cerullo added two tries and a conversion and Rafaela De Conti scored two tries.

Canada vs Mexico

Canada  Shut out Mexico 54-0 Mexico to conclude the Women’s Round Day One matches. Tausani Levale was the leading point scorer for Canada with two tries and two conversions. Breanne Nicholas, Emma Chown, and Caroline Crossley also added two tries. Delaney Aikens and Olivia De Couvreur added solo tries for Canada.

Round Two Saturday, July 27

Tomorrow will consist of the two remaining Pool matches for each team. The pool results will determine the concluding Day 3 matches.

Day One Men’s Pool Round One Matches

Pool A

Brazil vs Chile

Brazil and Chile opend the Men’s Lima Pan American Rugby Sevens competition with a 14 all draw. With the USA following with a 62-0 win over Guyana, the day two matches for Brazil and Chile will likely determine the number two team out of Pool A.

Brazil scored two tries, solo efforts by Lucas Duque and Daniel Sancery with Josh Reeves and Moises Duque adding conversions. Chile added tries by Francesco Urroz and Rodrigo Fernandez with Fernandez and Marcelo Torrealba adding conversions.

USA vs Guyana

The USA players wanted to show that they deserved to be on the 2019-2020 HSBC Sevens Series by beating Guyana 62-0.

The USA opened the scoring with a try by Anthony Welmers and a conversion by Cody Melphy. Demonte Noble added another with Melphy converting again to lead 14-0. Maceo Brown, Harvey Wheeler, and Marcus Tupuola added tries with Melphy adding a conversion on the last try to lead 31-0 at the break.

The USA opened the second half with a try by Jake Lachina with Melphy converting to lead 38-0. Brown and Broselle then added tries to push the lead to 48-0. The restart by Naima Fula’au was gathered in the air by Maceo Brown for a highlight try with Fuala’au converting. Broselle added a final try with Fuala’au again converting for the 62-0 opening victory.

Pool B

Canada vs Uruguay

Canada scored five tries and added three conversions by Nathan Hirayama for a 31-0 win over Uruguay. Hirayama also added two ties along with Adam Cejanovic with Josiah Morra adding a solo one.

Argentina vs jamaica

Argentina concluded day one with a 52-0 victory over Jamaica. Francisco Ulloa was the team’s points leader with 16 on the strength of two tries and three conversions. Fernando Luna had two tries, with Tomas Vanni, German Schultz, and Matias Osadczak adding solo ones. Santiago Mare added three conversions.
