Glendale Raptors Signs Murphy Taramai

The Glendale Raptors have added a Super Rugby player in Murphy Taramai for the remainder of the 2019 Major League Rugby season. The 26-year-old back row is 6’2″ and 218 lbs.

Murphy is from Upper Hutt, New Zealand and attended Upper Hutt College, which is outside of Wellington. He played rugby league at the school with the team having an unbeaten record over three years. This earned him a trial with the Penrith Panthers, an NRL side in Australia in 2011.

The trial was a brief one with Murphy returning to Wellington to concentrate on rugby sevens. He played with Wellington from 2014-2016 and helped the team win a National title in 2014. His performance with the team led to his selection to the All-Blacks Sevens for 2014-2015, where he played in four Series tournaments, 19 matches, and scored 1 try.

Murphy signed with North Harbour and played in the Mitre 10 Cup from 2016-2019 and for the Blues, a Super Rugby team, from 2017-2018. He now joins the Glendale Raptors in Major League Rugby for 2019.
