The New England Free Jacks added Owen Collins for the 2019 exhibition season. The 34-year-old back is 6’2″ and 205 lbs.
Owen began playing rugby at Boston College High School from 2000-2003. He then attended Stonehill College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He attended Stonehill to play football but stopped playing after his Freshman year to concentrate on playing rugby with the Boston Irish Wolfhounds, which he played for from 2004-2017. The last couple of years were in a player/coaching role with the backs.
Owen then retired from rugby for the past two years, as his marriage and having a child took up his attention. The opportunity to play professional rugby with his brother Danny on the Free Jacks lured him back for the 2019 exhibition season.
Owen also played rugby in 2005 in New Zealand for a season with the Harbour Hawks in Dunedin. In 2008 he played in Wales for a season with Pontypool and the Dragons Academy. In 2008 he also played in the NA 4 tournament with the US Hawks.
Owen also played in two Under-19 World Cups in 2003 in Paris and 2004 in Durban under Salty Thompson.
Owen, like many Major League Rugby players, will balance his current position in Software Sales with playing professional rugby.
