NOLA Gold Rugby has just strengthened their 2019 Major League Rugby team with the signing of USA Eagle 492, Tony Lamborn. The 27-year-old flanker is 6’0″ and 232 lbs.
Tony was born in Timaru, New Zealand and was U.S. eligible as the result of having an American father. He lives in Havelock North Town District and went to Ashburton College. At age 16, he left school to pursue a rugby career, playing for Hawke’s Bay Under-18s and Under-20s.
In 2012 he made 9 appearances for North Otago, and in 2013 made his debut for the Hawke’s Bay Magpies and has since made 46 appearances until 2017.
In 2016 he played with the Hurricanes in the Investec Super Rugby competition, making 4 appearances. He also made his Eagles debut against Italy on June 18, 2016, and has earned 18 caps, starting 14 times and scoring 7 tries. His latest international was against Romania on November 17, 2018.
In 2018, he signed with the San Diego Legion and then with the Southland Stages in the Mitre 10 Cup. He now joins NOLA Gold Rugby for 2019.
NOLA Gold Comments
“Tony is a tough, aggressive player both defensively and on the attack. He brings international experience and physicality after playing at such a high level with the Eagles and the Hurricanes,” general manager Ryan Fitzgerald said.
“Tony does a lot of the things that people don’t notice in a game. He has a huge work rate and is great over the ball. He’s another player with previous professional experience and that will add massively to what we are building down here in the swamp,” head coach Nate Osborne said.
