Rugby United New York & Derek Lipscomb

Rugby United New York has utilized Derek Lipscomb at wing for the 2019 Major League Rugby team’s preseason matches. Derek is 29-years-old, 6’2″, and 225 lbs.

Derek is from Cincinnati, Ohio and lives in New York. He attended North College Hill High School and then went to Columbia University from 2007-2011.

At North College Hill High School, “he earned varsity letters in football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and track, and field, was a three-time captain of football and basketball teams, and captain of wrestling for one season. He also was named to the All-Southwest Team in football 2005 and 2006, was all-conference as a sophomore, junior and senior, and team MVP in senior season. He was first team all-conference in wrestling, with the team winning the league championship in 2007, won Coaches Award for basketball, and was All-Academic Team for five sports.”

While at Columbia University, Derek was captain of the rugby team for the 2010-2011 season and also played football as a linebacker. After graduating from Columbia, he then went to the UCL Insitute of Education from 20115-2016 and earned a Master’s Degree in Education.

Derek has been employed as a Mortuary Assistant at Mt Sinai Hospital in 2010. Today, he is the After Director and Reading Specialist at the Buckley School in New York City. Derek is a difference maker in people’s lives and balances his career, his family life, and being a professional athlete. The challenges are many, but Derek does all well.

In addition to playing rugby at Columbia University, Derek is a long-time player for Old Blue. He helped the team advance to USA Rugby Club 15s and 7s Nationals and won the Elite Cup Title in 2018 over the Chicago Lions after the team completed an undefeated American Rugby Premiership season. The team advanced to the 2014 Club 7s National Final in 2014.

Derek also played rugby 7s for the Northeast Academy, playing in the Las Vegas Invitational in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017. He also played in the Barbados 7s in 2016.

In 2014 he played on the New York City 7s at the World Club 7s at Twickenham. He also played for the USA Falcons 7s on their South American Tour.

While earning his Master’s Degree in London, Derek continued to play rugby with Blackheath in 2015-2016.

Derek is a talented professional in the community and on the rugby pitch. His leadership will be invaluable for Rugby United New York, as it has been for other clubs and in life.
