San Diego Legion Signs Australian Prop Matt Sandell

San Diego Legion signed Waratahs Super Rugby Prop Matt Sandell for the 2019 major League Rugby season. He is 23-years-old, 6’2″, and 245 lbs.

Matt is from Wellington, New South Wales, Australia and moved as a youth to Mudgee, He attended St. Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill, a suburb of Sydney, playing with their first side at tighthead prop from 2011-2013.

He was selected to the Australian Schoolboys in both 2012 and in 2013. The team won the Trans-Tasman Shield in New Zealand in 2012 and toured Europe in 2013.

Matt made his debut with Sydney University in the Shute Shield in 2014 and continued with the team since then. He was selected for the Australia Under-20s and played in the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship.

For the 2014-15 season, he played with the Sydney Stars in the National Rugby Championship. From 2015-18 he was part of the Waratahs Super Rugby team and in 2018 he played with the Sydney Rays before signing a contract to play with the San Diego Legion for 2019.

Matt has played both tighthead and loosehead prop, providing the Legion with flexibility for their 2019 MLR season. Matt is a young, but is an experienced rugby player, who will compliment the other forwards in set pieces and around the pitch.
