Hong Kong Defeats Kenya 42-17 in Repechage

Hong Kong vs Kenya Repechage

Hong Kong defeated Kenya 42-17 in the Rugby World cup 2019 Repechage in Marseille, France on Saturday, November 17. Hong Kong gained a bonus point win and will play Canada next Friday with the Repechage on the line.

Canada faces Germany in the second match of the day. Hong Kong will hope for a Canada nonbonus point win or a draw with Germany.  A win by Germany will mean that Germany will have the inside track of advancing as the Rechagewinner with a victory next week against Kenya.

Match Recap

Hong Kong secured al bonus-point 42-17 win over Kenya. Hong Kong will still be in contention to qualify as the World Cup in Repechage winner, however much depends on the match between Canada and Germany that follows.

Kenya began the match on fire with a try by Tony Onyango, which was then converted by Sam Oliech for a 7-0 lead. Elkeans Musonye then took a pass by Collins Injera for a try giving the Simbas a 12-0 lead.

Hong Kong answered back with Max Denmark scoring the first try for Hong Kong. Ben Rimene then slotted the conversion to cut the lead to 12-7.

Hong Kong opened the second half with a try off a lineout by Nick Hewson and took a 14-12 lead after Rimene’s conversion. Toby Fenn then broke a tackle and added another try pushing the lead to 21-12 after Rimene’s conversion.

Kenya answered back with a second try by Tony Onyango from an offload by Leo Seje to cut the lead to 21-17.  That would be as close as it would get, as Hong Kong scored three more tries, two by Thomas Lamboley and another by Lewis WArner to seal the match 42-17. Ben Rimene continued his perfect streak at 4, before giving way to Matt Rosslee for the final two conversions.

While Hong Kong will hope for a non-bonus point win by Canada over Germany or better yet a draw, Kenya has been eliminated from contending for the Repechage and will play for pride next Friday against Germany. That will give plenty of motivation to Germany and to Canada to claim the win later today.
