USA Women’s Selects vs. England Academy
The USA Women’s Selects held on for a 25-24 win over England Academy on Tuesday, November 13 at Newbury RFC. It was the first win for Head Coach Rob Cain and the women’s 15s program this fall.
The Selects side was selected from the pool of athletes for the Eagles’ Autumn Internationals 2018. The November matches began against New Zealand and England and will finish against Ireland at Energia Park this Sunday, Nov. 18 at 8 AM ET. The game will be live streamed on Ireland Rugby’s YouTube Channel.
England scored first from short range from a scrum as Bryony Cleall touched down and Ellie Green converted. The USA answered back with a penalty kick by Megan Foster to cut the lead to 7-3.
England pushed their lead to 14-3 after Georgie Lingham scooped up a loose ball from an errant USA pass and Ellie Green converted.
An offload by Joyce Taufa to Evan Hoese gave the USA it’s first try. Megan Foster added the conversion and the lead was cut to 14-10. Georgie Lingham was then sent to the bin for a dangerous tackle and Joyce Taufa added a try for the USA to take their first lead, 15-14 at the break.
The lead changed hands right after the break as England’s Ellie Underwood scored in the corner making it 19-15. The USA answered back as Evan Hoese scored on an offload from Darian Lovelace to reclaim the lead, 20-19.
The Selects increased their lead after a kick and chase by Kelsi Stockert, and then Courtney Kuehl scored from 40-meters after a breakdown for a 25-19 lead.
In the closing minutes, Hannah West added a try for England in the corner, but after the difficult conversion was missed, the Selects claimed a 25-24 win.
