He then captained the New England Free Jacks (Preview article) in their first exhibition match against the Ontario Arrows at Wanderers Grounds in Halifax, Nova Scotia on October 20, 2018. It is unclear at this time whether he is on loan for the 2019 season since the Free Jacks will join Major League Rugby for the 2020 season along with Atlanta.

Following the 2018 MLR season, Matt was named to the second team All-MLR team at openside flanker. He was selected to the “Team of the Week” four times over the course of the eight-week season and was recognized as one of the best back-row players in the league.

Matt has also been part of Tiger Rugby and has assisted his rugby career.

Rugby United New York Comments

“It was a great inaugural year for MLR,” Hughston told us. “I enjoyed my time down in the swamps and the special people who took me into the NOLA family. I’m excited to have a chance to play with the country’s top players here in New York. I know the skill on our roster will allow us to play expansive, fast rugby, and our depth will allow us to make it through a long season.”

“His physicality, coupled with his rugby IQ and ball skills, make him a very versatile back row player,” said General Manager James English. “He fits in very nicely with the style of play we are looking to implement.”

“I watched Matt play some very good rugby last season,” added Head Coach Mike Tolkin. “I’m excited to have him on board and to be working with him for the first time. We expect him to bring high energy, competitiveness, and great athleticism to our back row.”
