Houston SaberCats Sign Backrow Mathew Faoagali

Houston SaberCats & Mathew Faoagali

The Houston SaberCats added Sydney Shute Shield back row Mathew Faoagali for the 2019 Major League Rugby season. He is 6 feet tall and weighs 242 pounds.

Matty was born in American Samoa and moved to New Zealand with his family while young. He attended a church-affiliated school, De La Salle College, where he started playing rugby in the 1a Auckland schools competition in both rugby 15s and 7s.

He then played for the Auckland Samoa Rugby Union Under-18s and men’s division in 2013 and for the same in 2014 with the East Tamaki Rugby Union.

He then moved to Australia where he competed for the Sunbury Tigers and the Melton Warriors in Melbourne and then with Penrith Rugby Union in the Sydney Shute Shield before finishing in 2018 with the West Harbour Pirates.

Matty will be a player to watch as he plays with the Houston SaberCats in 2019. Not only will be a valuable addition with his previous professional experience, but he is U.S. eligible and with an impressive season, he could find himself on the National team radar?
