2018 RWC7s Championship Quarterfinals

In the round of 16, the USA Men’s Eagles defeated Wales 35-0 and then lost to England 24-19 in extra time in a Rugby World Cup 7s Championship Quarterfinal. The USA will play Scotland in a 5th place semi-final on Sunday, July 22 at 11:56 am PT.

USA v England Recap

The USA Rugby Men’s Eagles struck first as Matai Leuta offloaded to Madison Hughes for a try under the posts. Hughes then converted to take a 7-0 lead. England’s Dan Norton answered back evading Niua’s tackle and Tom Mitchell converted to level the match at 7 all.

The Eagles took the restart and after swinging the ball wide from side to side used an England penalty to kick for territory. England’s defense held the USA in check and attacked from a scrum. Perry Baker appeared to make a try-saving tackle on Dan Norton, but after a TMO, the try was awarded. England took a 12-7 lead into the break.

Oliver Lindsay-Hague opened the scoring in the second half for England and after Mitchell’s conversion, the score was 19-7 to England.

The Eagles 7s took advantage of an England penalty and kicked for possession. Maka Unufe went wide left and after moving the ball across the pitch, Folau Niua dove over for a try, cutting the score to 19-12.

The ensuing restart was claimed by Niua. Soon after Perry Baker split two defenders and scored under the posts. After the conversion by Hughes, the match was leveled at 19 all.

England claimed the restart and was penalized. The USA kicked for territory advancing the ball into England’s territory. The lineout, however, was lost, allowing England to attack inside the USA 22-meters. Once again, a penalty thwarted their attack. Neither team could score and the match went into extra time.

England claimed the restart in extra time and a cross kick by Tom Mitchell to Phil Burgess sealed the match with a try.

With the 24-19 win over the USA, England will play South Africa in the Championship Semi-Final. The USA will play Scotland in the 5th place semi-finals on July 22 at 11:56 am PT.
