Austin Elite Rugby & Zac Mizell

Austin Elite Rugby signed Zac Mizell as a flyhalf and utility back for the Major League Rugby 2018 season.

Zac is 29 years old and grew up in Keller, Texas and lives in Austin, Texas. He began playing youth rugby at age 11 with the Alliance Rugby Club and after graduating high school, he joined the Dallas Harlequins in 2008, where he played in the USA Rugby Super League until 2010.

He then went to Arkansas State University in January 2011 where the team advanced to the USA National 15s Semi-finals that year. The following year the team lost in the finals and in 2013, finished in third place. In sevens, the Red Wolves won the National Championship in 2012 and in 2013. Both years he won All-American honors in both 15s and 7s and was the MVP in the 2012 tournament.

In 2012, Zac was selected to play for the USA Selects in the American Rugby Championship. In 2013, he was invited to Rugby World Cup Sevens Training Camp and then played for the Eagles 7s team in 2013, earning six caps. At the time he joined the Eagles 7s program at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, he had one last semester to complete his degree.

Mizell then moved to Austin, Texas and played with the Austin Blacks. In 2015 the Austin Blacks advanced to the USA Rugby Club Division 1 National Championship Semi-Finals. In 2016, he continued to play with the Austin Blacks until joining PRO Rugby for their inaugural 2016 season with the Ohio Aviators.

Zac Mizell currently is the Head Coach of the University of Texas Men’s Rugby Club. Alex Goff interviewed Mizell about the program and his plans for improvement for FLORugby.
