Austin Huns Release

Austin Huns Rugby is excited to announce Luis Sanchez as the Director of Rugby for the 2017-2018 season. Sanchez brings four years of experience coaching the Division 1 and Division 2 Austin Valkyries, where he will continue as the head coach as well. Bringing a shared vision to the clubs’ practice and game structure will strengthen the bond that has existed between the Huns and Valkyries.

Coach Sanchez is no stranger to the Huns–racking up 18 years with the club, including time as the starting fly half for a very successful Division 2 Huns program and playing a pivotal role in the Huns transition to Division 1 several years ago. He recently led the Huns on the pitch as Assistant Coach and Backs Specialist for the 2015-2016 season. Sanchez also served in a leading role with the development of the Nixon Lane rugby complex in Austin.

“I’m looking forward to continuing the success that the Huns have accomplished throughout their 45 years as a club, both on and off the field.” Sanchez echoed the Huns’ reason for his hire by recounting the pathway in front of him, “Strengthening the club culture and developing a sustainable plan for all aspects of the game will assist the Huns in being one of the biggest and best clubs in the nation, year after year.”

Sanchez’s four years of repeat playoff appearances at the Austin Valkyries’ helm, as well as experiences in the Club 7s playoffs helped his resume rise to the top of the Huns search. His past stints with Huns Rugby 7s and the Negro y Azul 7s program–recently featured at Rugbytown 7s–also helped make this a relatively easy decision for the Huns Board of Directors.

Sanchez’s pedagogy and playoff experience bring renewed excitement and anticipation ahead of the upcoming seasons for the Austin Huns 15s and 7s programs.
