Carolinas Kickoff Classic
Carolinas Geographic Rugby Union Release
The Carolinas Geographic Rugby Union is excited to announce that the union is officially launching the Carolinas Kickoff Classic. The tournament, set for Saturday September 9th at the National Athletic Village in Southern Pines, North Carolina, is expected to become a yearly event. The tournament is open to all registered CGRU Men’s and Women’s Clubs in the Carolinas. The tournament venue will also serve as the location for the 2017 CGRU Annual General Meeting of Membership. Fully sponsored by the CGRU, the tournament is free to full member clubs of the CGRU participating at all levels… from D2 to Social clubs.
The tournament aims to serve as a warm up before the start of the CGRU matrix season, but also double as an opportunity for clubs throughout the Carolinas to play against clubs they might not otherwise see on a regular basis. Each team is guaranteed at least two matches (20-25 minute halves) during the event. The tournament format is dependent on the number of clubs that register for the event.
“This is a great opportunity for teams to play outside their conferences,” said CGRU President Simone Bontly. “We’re also hoping to see more participation at the AGM as it is important for all of our members to be involved.”
In a recent membership survey, one of the prevailing requests was to bring back the union tournament. The CGRU Board has been at work planning the Kickoff Classic and hope to use the tournament as a platform to continue to grow and improve relationships among member clubs. In the future, the CGRU hopes to grow the event into a full weekend of rugby and development opportunities for members.
Additional tournament details will be made available as the event draws closer.
Clubs can register for the tournament by completing the registration. Registration closes on Friday August 25th. Early registration is recommended.
