With only weeks remaining until the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships, seven College rugby sevens teams that will be participating in the Championships, came together on Saturday, May 6, for the Delaware 7s at Frazier Field in Newark, Delaware. Army, Delaware, Kutztown, Navy and Temple will be playing in the CRCs Men’s Collegiate Division, while Mount St. Mary’s and West Chester will be competing in the Philadelphia Division.
Only Kutztown entered the Delaware Sevens having participated in several tournaments, with their first side being undefeated. For both Army and Navy, it was their first sevens tournament after concluding the Varsity Cup 15s competition. The other teams only had a tournament or two under their belts, as weather has been a factor this Spring.
Kutztown emerged with a 20-14 win over Navy in the Cup Final, while Army beat a depleted Mount St. Mary’s side, with 7 healthy players left for third. Kutztown 2 defeated Army 2 14-12 in the Tier 2 Championship, while West Chester won 22-10 over Kutztown 3 in the Tier 3 Championship. Delaware and Temple played for 7th place.

It’s always a pleasure to meet with coaches and for this tournament, I was able to interview six of the seven coaches that will be at the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship. Temple Head Coach John Sciotto, could not attend this event, but designated players to interview. The interviews are on the DJCoil Rugby YouTube Channel.
