Marist Hawaii End Hawaii Rugby Union League Season In First, Playoffs Begin

The Hawaii Rugby Union concluded their season on April 15 with makeup games between Marist and the Titans with first place on the line. The Titans avenged a 21-10 loss to Marist on February 25th to win 31-27 on Saturday against Marist. Despite both teams having 9-1 records, the point differential from the two matches, earned Marist the Hawaii Rugby Union regular season title.

The Raiders and Timberwolves both gained wins on Saturday with the Raiders beating the Harlequins 19-14 and the Timberwolves winning 90-24 against the West Oahu Leatherbacks. That left them tied for third place in the standings with 5-5 records. In head to head competition the Timberwolves and the Kalihi Raiders split their regular season matches with the Timberwolves winning 27-12 on January 21, while the Kalihi Raiders beat the Timberwolves 51-17 on April 1. On the basis of head to head competition the Kalihi Raiders took third place, while the Timberwolves ended in fourth place.

The Hawaii Harlequins ended their rugby 15s season in fifth place, while the West Oahu Leatherbacks ended in sixth.

The Semi-Finals will be played on April 22 with 1st seed Marist playing the 4th seed Timberwolves, while the 2nd seed Titans play the 3rd seeded Kalihi Raiders. The winners will play for the Championship on April 29, while the losers play for third.

Upon the conclusion of the rugby 15s season, the attention will turn to rugby 7s.

Women’s and Youth Rugby

Women’s Rugby is also a strong part of The Hawaii Rugby Union and Women’s Championship was held on April 8th with the Lady Raiders winning 19-14 over the Lady Quins in extra time. For a recap click here.

Youth Rugby is helping to grow rugby in Hawaii. There are high school and youth boys and girls women teams in Oahu, Maui, and in the Big Island.
