Delmarva’s brand new U19 team traveled to Alopacas Park and won it’s first two games ever played
High School rugby kicks off in Sussex County
Delmarva Rugby’s U19 team played its first games ever on March 25th in Alopacas Park in Wilmington. Surprising many of the people at the event, the U19’s won its first game against Archmere Academy’s B side. The first half was a learning experience for many of the players as they fell behind by 15 points. Adjustments during halftime allowed Delmarva to begin changing the momentum. Scores by Jamiere Sample and Rob Van Pelt tightened the score to 15-10. Malik Brewer was able to step into a passing lane as time expired and run the 60 meters for the tying score. Rob Van Pelt converted the points after and Delmarva was able to walk away with a stunning 17-15 win.
The second game against another newly formed team (St. Marks) was not as close as Delmarva was able to score five tries and convert on 3 of them for a 31-0 win. Hunter Severs (Team Captain) said of the day, “It was very exciting to finally get out on the pitch and play a game. Everyone contributed and played hard. We want to thank St. Marks, Archmere and all of the other teams that were at the tournament for a great day of rugby.” Anyone interested in joining the team can reach out to Tom Colucci at 302-930-1003. All players are welcome. Experience not necessary.
