Eagles 7s Win Bronze at USA Sevens

The USA Men’s Eagles Sevens faced New Zealand for the Bronze medal in the USA Sevens on March 5th at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. The Eagles Sevens reached the Bronze medal match after a comeback 20-17 win by South Africa in the Cup Semis. In the other Semi-final Fiji came back to defeat New Zealand 19-14 and will play South Africa in the Cup Final.

The Eagles will be celebrating their 19-15 win over New Zealand for the bronze medal, as they added their try for the win with no time remaining.

USA v New Zealand 

Tthe USA Men’s Eagles 7s started the scoring against New Zealand as  Maka Unufe grounded the ball in the corner. Stephen Tomasin made the difficult conversion with the strong winds for a 7-0 lead.

Soon after, Isaac Te Tamaki was sent to the bin after a infraction on a tackle. The USA was not able to take advantage while New Zealand was down a man.

New Zealand narrowed the score to 7-5 before halftime, as DJ Forbes touched down in the corner as he was tackled by Danny Barrett.

The second half began with Barrett plowing ahead through defenders, but an errant pass went into touch. After a penalty by the USA, Tim Mikkelson found a gap and scored in the corner for a 10-7 lead.

USA came right back as Barrett broke through the defense after a switch and an Iosefo offload and quick hands allowed Barrett to add a try under the posts. Tomasin then converted for a 14-10 lead.

On the ensuing restart, Mikkelson caught the ball and Sione Molia weaved and dummied his way in for a try to reclaim the lead, 15-14.

Barrett then ran to the New Zealand 5 meters. After the hooter blew, Nen Pinkelman drew in a defender and Andrew Durutalo scored the winning try.

The USA will be celebrating their 19-15 win to finish with the bronze medal at the USA Sevens. This is coupled with the Women’s Sevens 4th place finish.

Rugby in the USA is improving rapidly and the teams are now contenders in any tournament.
