The Viña del Mar 7s in Chile is the second of two legs of the South American Sevens international competition.

The rankings from Punta del Este were used to seed the Viña del Mar 7s. In Pool A, Argentina, who won the first leg with a try at death over Fiji, is joined by the USA Falcons, Uruguay and Brazil. In Pool A are Fiji,  Chile, Colombia and the Canada Maple Leafs.

There is another competition also at stake for a place in the 2017 Las Vegas 7’s, Vancouver 7’s and the Hong Kong Sevens. Entering the Viña del Mar 7s, the standings are Chile (17 points), followed by Uruguay (12 points), Colombia (10 points) and Brazil (7 points). The team that finishes first from these four nations will participate in all three tournaments, while the team in second will also go to the Hong Kong Sevens. Total points from the both South American Sevens legs will determine these teams. Points for a 1-8 finish in each leg receive 22, 19, 17, 15, 12, 10 8 and 7 points, respectively.
