New England College rugby hosted visiting Northeastern University on Saturday September 17 in Henniker, N.H. and came away with a 9-5 win. With the win the Pilgrims are 1-1 on the season, while Northeastern is 0-1.
In a defensive battle, New England College took a 6-0 lead into halftime as Andrew Ramsden slotted two 30 meter penalty kicks.
Early in the second half, Northeastern’s Ryan Crowe missed penalty kick that could have narrowed the lead. When New England College had a similar opportunity, Ramsden kicked a third penalty kick to increase the lead to 9-0.
In the waning seconds, Northeastern Sean McElhinney scored at the death to make it 9-5.
Tai Bayer, NEC head coach said “We came out flat and disjointed due to the flux we went through with our lineup. It wasn’t a pretty win but considering all the changes our roster went through this week we will take it. We need to rest up, get healthy and get mentally right to take on UConn next week.”
New England College travels to play the University of Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 24. Northeastern hosts UMass on Saturday at Parsons Field at 6pm.
