Women’s rugby hit the Hunter Stadium pitch for the first time this season Friday night and came away with a 49-14 victory over the St. Louis Sabres.
The first 20 minutes of the match stayed close with both teams trading scores, but the Lady Lions were able to take a 17-7 halftime lead. Lindenwood used a balanced attack on both sides of the ball to pull away in the second half.
Head coach Billy Nicholas noted the significance of playing the Sabres.
“In a long running history and relationship with the local women’s team, it was a great opportunity to continue to build rugby in our community,” he said. “We are just finishing our pre-season camp and it’s great to see us step up and put together a great team performance. We will be using this match to continue to grow and learn as a program.”
Lindenwood returns to the pitch when the second XV hosts the Little Rock Women’s Rugby Football Club at Hunter Stadium September 17. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night.
